Interested citizens are invited to attend next week's Dawson County Historical and Genealogical Society meeting at which Leslie Barker Thomas will discuss the history of Indians who populated our area, the Cherokees and Creeks.

Thomas, currently president of the Gilmer County Historical Society, is also president of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association.

She has authored numerous magazine and newspaper articles and has been a historical research coordinator for the Trail of Tears Association for 18 years.

In announcing the invitation, Judy Harris, president of the Dawson County society, said that she was very pleased with the number of visitors who came to hear David Coughlin give a presentation about his new book on the early history of Buford Dam and Lake Lanier.

"If you were at that meeting and wanted to purchase his book but were not prepared to do it then," Harris said, "You can call Mr. Coughlin at (770) 354-7756 or email at davcough@gmail.com."

The July 25 meeting begins at 5 p.m. in the Coleman Room of the Dawson County Library.
