State Sen. Steve Gooch was named to the third ranking leadership position in the Senate Republican Caucus for the upcoming legislative session on Monday.

As Majority Whip, Gooch's primary responsibilities include researching legislation, educating and informing caucus members and ensuring a full caucus presence during important legislative votes.

He said he is honored to be serving in such an important leadership role.

"I remain committed to defending core constitutional principles such as limited government and fiscal responsibility, and will remember these ideals when advising the caucus on legislation that will create a more prosperous Georgia," he said.

Gooch represents the 51st Senate District, which includes Dawson, Fannin, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Union and White counties and portions of Forsyth and Pickens. He also serves as chairman of the Transportation Committee and as Secretary of the Majority Caucus.

He is also vice chair of the Senate Economic Development committee, a member of the Senate Natural Resources and Environment and Appropriations Committees, and an ex-officio member of the Senate Rules Committee.

In a statement, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, who presides over the Senate, called Gooch a "committed, hard-working public servant who will serve with great distinction as majority whip.

"I appreciate his dedication to his district as well as to the Senate. I look forward to working with him and the rest of our leadership team to advance our agenda in the General Assembly," he said.

The 153rd Legislative Session of the Georgia General Assembly will convene on Jan. 12 at the Georgia State Capitol.
