Dawson County’s newest commissioner selected familiar faces as his appointments to the county’s planning commission.

During his first meeting Thursday as the county’s District 3 Commissioner, Jimmy Hamby appointed Vernon Smith as the district’s representative to the planning commission.

He appointed former commissioner Jim King as the district’s alternate.

The planning commission hears planning and zoning issues before making recommendations to the board of commissioners, which has the final say.

Smith previously served on the planning board, while King served as county commissioner and currently chairs the Etowah Water and Sewer Authority board of directors.

“They are both sort of on the same track as I am as far as pro growth and industry in the county,” Hamby said. “They both want to see more jobs in the county.”

Hamby said experience also played a role in his selections.

“They have experience and we need people on the board who know the laws and know the zoning regulations,” he said.
