Donation box issue up for discussion

An ordinance that places limits on clothing donation boxes across the county is up for discussion this week.

A second public hearing will be held Thursday during the 6 p.m. meeting of the Dawson County Board of Commissioners. The Dawson County Planning Commission heard the proposed ordinance March 20 and voted to recommend approval as drafted.

Planning Director David McKee said the ordinance was proposed after residents voiced concerns regarding the boxes.

He said planning and development received several complaints about litter in and around the boxes.

The proposed ordinance would allow enforcement staff the ability to regulate where the boxes are placed. A 24 hour contact would also be required on the donation box, and boxes could not exceed 150 cubic feet.

If approved as drafted, donation boxes would require an annual permit and could only be placed in commercial zoning districts with the property owner's approval.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the assembly room of the new Dawson County Government Center.
