Council proposes change to alcohol ordinance

Dawsonville is looking to amend an ordinance that would allow restaurants in the city limits to serve distilled spirits on Sundays.

Currently city restaurants can only sell beer and wine on Sundays.

The proposed amendment, which the city council reviewed on first reading July 1, would allow eateries and hotels in the city to sell alcoholic drinks, including distilled spirits, between 12:30 p.m. and midnight on Sundays.

If approved by the council after its second reading Aug. 5, the issue would go before voters in November.

"The referendum would be on [the] Nov. 5 [ballot], which is the same day as the citywide election," said Dana Miles, city attorney. "There would be no additional costs to the city for calling the referendum since we are having a city election anyway."

If the referendum passes, the change could take effect a week later after a window of five business days to allow residents to file an election challenge, according to Miles.

Dawsonville residents in November 2011 overwhelmingly voted to allow alcohol sales at package, grocery and convenience stores on Sunday.
