The city of Dawsonville will hold its second reading of the 2013-14 budget at 5 p.m. tonight at city hall.

Currently, the city plans to set a budget of $1.22 million, down from last year's $1.61 million amended budget.

While last year's budget was set initially at $1.27, three amendments caused the budget to increase by about $350,000, with the city purchasing a digital sign, paying off a loan and setting up the city revitalization's revolving fund.

In the current proposed budget, the Downtown Development Authority has been allotted the same $15,000 funding as last year, with the provision that they will be allowed to come before the council to request additional funds if needed, according to Mayor James Grogan.

During the council's June 3 meeting, the authority had requested an additional $10,000 this fiscal year, for a total of $25,000.

"We heard the request, but we didn't make any changes," City Clerk Bonnie Warne said. "The additional money they requested actually fell into other departments in the revitalization plan. Their part is only the actual planning."

Overall, Grogan said he hopes that this fiscal year will be about smooth budgets and continued improvements.

"I think we're looking at smoothing some things out this year in the budget," Grogan said. "We did a lot of things this past year, like paving all of the streets downtown, sealing and marking city hall's parking lots, among other things."

As the budget has not yet been voted on and fully approved, the numbers listed above are tentative.
