Qualifying for Dawsonville's March 17 special election begins Tuesday.

The ballot will feature one city council seat. Qualifying will run through Feb. 12.

The special election ballot will feature the council seat left vacant after the November resignation of former Councilman Chris Gaines following his move outside of the Dawsonville city limits.

Gaines' seat is currently being held by Caleb Phillips, who was sworn in for the temporary appointment in December.

Phillips, who has said he would seek the position, previously served on the council as an appointed member when he was selected to fill a seat left open by current-mayor James Grogan and former city councilman Calvin Byrd when both stepped down to run for mayor upon the death of former Mayor Joe Lane Cox.

The qualifying fee for a council seat is $180.

Dates and fees for this year's election were set by the council during its Jan. 7 meeting, pursuant to state law.
