Still a little early for holiday cheer?

Attending the time-honored Tree Lighting Celebration downtown is a sure way to catch the Christmas spirit.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 2 at city hall. City Councilman Mike Wilson said there’s plenty of festive fun to go around.

“The kids love to see Santa Claus,” Wilson said. “People get to come out and meet and spend time together. Lots of community spirit.”

Mayor Joe Lane Cox said last year’s gathering brought out more than 300 people.

“It’s a good place for people to gather around,” Cox said. “They do some Christmas carols, and it’s just fun for all ages. Something for everybody.”

In addition, children will receive one free photo with Santa Claus, who is scheduled to make a guest appearance.

There will also be complimentary hot chocolate and apple cider. Calvary Baptist Church Pastor Glen Byrd will give the invocation.

The city’s Christmas tree, which stands about 26 feet tall outside city hall, will light up shortly after the event begins.
