Vietnam veterans announce scholarships

The Dawson County Chapter No. 970 of Vietnam Veterans of America announces its scholarship program for 2012.

Two scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,000 to a high school senior. There will be one winner from Dawson County High School and one from Lumpkin County High School, or an equivalent, accredited home schooling program.

Applicants must be a graduating senior and be a descendant of a U.S. military veteran of the Vietnam War or wartime service to present. Descendant, as defined by the chapter includes natural or adopted children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Applicants must be in financial need to meet college or university educational expenses, maintain above average grades, and most importantly, demonstrate a spirit of volunteerism and community involvement.

Applications are available through the counselor's office at the high school. Submission deadline is March 9, 2012.
