Athletes from both Dawson and Lumpkin counties will gather at Dawson County High School for the Dawson/Lumpkin Spring Games tomorrow.

Opening ceremonyies will begin at 9 a.m. and games starting at 9:15 a.m., with games rotating every 30 minutes.

"This year, [Dawson County High School teacher] Chess Hamby is heading up the games," said Dawson County Director of Special Education Hershel Bennett. "He's done an outstanding job setting this up."

The games, which focus on providing athletic training and competition for children and adults with disabilities, are mostly run through the work of volunteers.

"A lot of our exceptional children will be participating. These are children that would normally not be on a recreational team," Bennett said. "It gives them an opportunity to participate in two or three events and have a great day, socializing with kids from other counties."

This year, the Dawsonville Civitan Club is the game's primary sponsors.

The club set up raffles and rides to help fund the games and to support exceptional children and adults in Dawson County.

The event is free and open to the public.
