The Dawson County Board of Education voted 4-0 on Jan. 11 to make Roger Slaton 2010 chairman.

Will Wade, who was unable to attend, was elevated to vice chairman in a 4-0 vote.

After nomination, Slaton thanked former Chairman Cecil Bennett for his service to Dawson County.

“We appreciate it. We really do,” said Slaton, who presented Bennett with a plaque.

Superintendent Keith Porter echoed the remarks.

“We appreciate Cecil’s time on the board,” Porter said.

“I’ve seen Cecil in a lot of different areas, and one thing I can say is Cecil’s always the same. He loves people, and he cares for them, and he shows it in every way,” Porter added.

Bennett and Wade are both up for reelection in 2010. Neither have announced whether they intend to run again.

The next board of education meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Feb. 8.
