Schools make up for January inclement weather

Dawson County Schools will be open on Feb. 20 to make up for a snow day taken last month.

Due to the snow and poor road conditions from a winter storm that moved across Dawsonville on Jan. 6, schools were closed early on Jan. 6 and that following Monday, Jan. 11 as the two to five inches of snow and ice that blanketed the area was still causing issues on several roadways.

The Dawson County School System calendar for 2016-17 had originally scheduled a professional development day for Feb. 17 followed by a Feb. 20 inclement weather day which would have resulted in two days off for Dawson County students this week into next.

Students will still be off of school on Feb. 17 as teachers report for the development day.

They will, however, return to school on Feb. 20 to accommodate for the missed day last month.

As of now, there are two scheduled inclement weather days on Mar. 31 and Apr. 10.

The Apr. 10 date follows the school system's spring break which runs Apr. 3-7 and would add an extra day to the break.

These are dependent on upcoming weather conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, near normal temperatures are expected through April.
