Dawson County is preparing to play host to a special guest next week.

Sandra Deal, Georgia's First Lady, will be visiting July 30 as part of her Get Georgia Reading initiative.

"When we discuss the ability of our children to read - and to read proficiently, by the end of third grade - we are, of course, discussing education," Deal said. "We are also discussing the future of our state - its business prospects, its vibrancy and the experiences it is able to offer to its citizens.

"Reading proficiently begins by talking and reading to your child at home and continues with competent instruction in the classroom."

The event will be held from noon until 1:30 p.m. at the board of education community room at 30 Main Street.

"The board is proud to be able to provide a space for Mrs. Deal to come and speak on childhood literacy," said Dawson County School Superintendent Damon Gibbs.

The cost is $15 per person for the meal itself and reservations are requested by July 28.
