Students in the Dawson County School System will be able to receive free breakfasts and lunches for the remainder of the school year, thanks to an extension to the USDA school meal waiver.
The waiver, which was put into place near the beginning of the school year, allows all children in the school system to eat a nutritious breakfast and lunch for free.
Previously, the waiver was set to end at the end of December, but with the extension, it will now last through the end of the school year.
“The USDA waiver that was in place originally for us to allow our kids to eat free breakfast and lunch through the end of the calendar year was extended, and at this point, all of our students will get free breakfast and lunch meals through the remainder of the school year,” said superintendent Damon Gibbs. “So we’re really excited about that.”
