The Dawson County Board of Education has announced the sole finalist to become the next principal of Dawson County High School is a veteran educator from neighboring Hall County.

In making the announcement, Superintendent Damon Gibbs cited the credentials of Richard Crumley, currently the athletic director at North Hall High School.

"Mr. Crumley is a 25-year veteran teacher who has spent 23 of his 25 years at Jackson County," Gibbs said. "The other two, he has spent in Hall County."

The position opened when former principal Jute Wilson announced his resignation in April to accept the position of superintendent of the Lamar County school system.

"I was looking for place with a strong sense of community that takes pride in it itself and in its school system," Crumley said. "Dawson County's focal point is its school and its kids and there is such a huge sense of pride in the school system."

Crumley taught at Jackson County Middle, East Jackson Middle and Maysville Elementary prior to moving to Jackson County Comprehensive High School. He also served as assistant principal and athletic director at East Jackson Comprehensive High School, as well as athletic director of North Hall High School.

"I am looking forward to being a part of this community and working with the individuals that make it so special," he said. "I hope to continue the work Dr. Wilson and [former superintendent Keith] Porter have started, as well as the work Dr. Gibbs will continue here."

Crumley holds a bachelor's of science in health and physical education from the University of Georgia, a master's in health studies from the University of Alabama and a specialist's degree in educational leadership from Lincoln Memorial University.

He was expected to officially be approved by the board during its meeting Tuesday night at the central office.

If approved, Crumley's first day with the system will be July 1.
