Dawson County residents are invited to a special dance this weekend in support of a local charity's goal of bringing books to preschool-aged children each month.

WEE Books, a program developed to put age-appropriate books in the hands of preschool children, will be holding its sixth annual Barn Dance at 6:30 p.m. April 26 at Kinsey Family Farm off Jot Em Down Road in neighboring Forsyth County.

The second of WEE Book's major annual fundraisers, the proceeds from the dance help pay for more than 50 percent of Dawson County children, from birth to 5 years, to receive free, age-appropriate books in the mail each month.

The program is made possible by a partnership with the Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy and the WEE Books Community Action Team. There are 70 teams across the state with more than 1,000 volunteers working toward mailing 25,000 books each month.

"Reading to children and allowing them access to books from birth is so important for their cognitive development," said Lionel Graves, president of Wee Books. "While toddlers may be able to manipulate iPads and iPhones these still do not take the place of a parent or grandparent reading, and often re-reading, a favorite story."

Tickets are $36 for adults, $10 for children ages 6 to 11 and free for ages 5 and younger.

Price of admission includes barbecue dinner from Jim ‘N Nick's BBQ, two glasses of wine or beer for adults and square dancing with instruction by caller Bill Agerton.
