A local legislator was honored earlier this month for his support of adult literacy efforts.

Rep. Amos Amerson received an award at the Georgia Adult Literacy Advocates Legislative Luncheon on Feb. 17 in Atlanta.

Joseph Hirsch, treasurer of Reading Education Association of Dawson County, nominated Amerson for the 2010 Adult Education Honor Roll.

Amerson was one of about 10 other legislators in the state of Georgia to receive the recognition.

The theme of the event — which was held at Central Presbyterian Church across from the state capitol — was “What Adult Literacy Means to Georgia: Economic Development, Health, Crime and Families.”

According to its Web site, the mission of Georgia Adult Literacy Advocates is to “increase awareness, support and funding for adult literacy needs and efforts in Georgia. Their vision is a literate Georgia with accessible learning opportunities for all adults.”
