The Dawson Christian Academy will hold a gospel singing fundraiser from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at Jesus’ Name Apostolic Church.
The fundraiser is being held to benefit the academy’s athletic department and offset the costs of starting a football program. Funds will also be used to continue to grow the school’s basketball program that is in its second year.
The fundraiser will feature many local gospel groups and solo artists, including The Goss Family and The Stowers Family, which both have children attending the academy, the Stephens Sisters and Glory Road.
Linda Benson, secretary for the academy, said that the school’s hope for the fundraiser is to "first and foremost make friends and promote fellowship."
"And then hopefully raise some money for the sports programs," Benson said.
Benson said that all donations are appreciated, and that it is "just a blessing to have the support of the community behind the school and the programs that it is involved in.
"We are planning on doing more fundraising events in the future, but do not know when at this time."
The academy, located behind Jesus’ Name Apostolic Church, was founded in 1985 by Pastor Bob Benson and Linda Benson.
The church is the main sponsor of the academy, but according to Michael Franks, a parent of one academy student, many other area churches have helped in the past and continue to help at present.
Franks said the groups singing at the fundraiser are volunteers and that the academy is grateful for their participation.
"My wife and I asked the singing group to come and donate their time and talents to the event," Franks said. "Every group is more than happy to come help out the school."
The academy is located at 77 Hugh Stowers Road in Dawsonville and the public is welcome to attend the event.
