Satellite tax office closing Friday

The Dawson Tax Commissioners satellite office is closing its doors Friday, Sept. 30, after only being open for nine months. The satellite office is located at Dawson County Emergency Services Station 2, at 145 Liberty Drive off Highway 53 East near The Tractor Supply.

Budgetary woes and a lack of personnel have led to the closing, according to Dawson County Tax Commissioner Linda Townley.

I dont have enough staff to keep it open and it doesnt make sense to keep someone down there if we arent doing enough business, she said.

Townley said that she moved several positions around to try and make the additional location work.

We started out with two people at the new location, but it was hard on this office and the new office was not functioning at the level it should, Townley said.

Budget constraints prevented hiring additional help. Townley said that even a part-time position would have eased things.

Hopefully in a better time we can reopen it, but for now Ive got to support this office, Townley said. I would have loved to have kept it open, but it just didnt make good sense.

The tax commissioners main office is located at 78 Howard Avenue East, Suite 140, and is open from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Citizens also can pay their taxes, renew tags and handle other business with the tax commissioners office online at dawsoncountytax.com.
