A Dawson County institution is scheduled to re-open to the public this Saturday, Sept. 1 after being shuttered for nearly four months.

The Dawsonville Pool Room has been closed since May, when the Georgia Department of Revenue came in and seized the business for more than $83,000 in back taxes, plus penalty fees and additional charges.

After a series of negotiations with the state, owner Gordon Pirkle was given the keys back to his restaurant June 21. Since then, Pirkle, his family and employees have been hard at work restoring and cleaning the restaurant.

The Pool Room will open in time for this weekends Labor Day NASCAR races at Atlanta Motor Speedway, including the Sept. 2 AdvoCare 500.

Pirkle confirmed that the business will open at 10 a.m. on both Sept. 1 and Sept. 2. Well open again for breakfast and normal operating hours beginning Monday, he said. Right now, we want to make sure everything runs smoothly.

The business has been accepting applications from prospective employees, and will continue to do so, Pirkle said. We have a mostly new staff in place, he said. There are some of the old staff, too.

Pirkle said that he remains in contact with the DOR. Both Pirkle and local attorney Joey Homans said that the business is still in negotiations with the state for the amount of money owed.

Were just wanting to get the doors open, Pirkle said. Saturday should be a good day.
