A Dawsonville man has been charged with homicide by vehicle after a head-on collision in May killed one person.

Matthew Nelson Turner, 31, was arrested July 10 and charged with reckless driving, serious injury by vehicle, driving on the wrong side of roadway, failure to maintain lane, tire requirements and first degree homicide by vehicle.

The wreck occurred at 3:10 p.m. Saturday, May 2, near the intersection of Highway 136 and Bailey Waters Road, according to officials.

Raymond Jerry Waters, 68, also of Dawsonville, died eight days later on May 10 from injuries sustained in the wreck.

There was a head-on collision with two people entrapped, Dawson County Deputy Chief Tim Satterfield said at the time. We had to extract both patients who were flown by helicopter to Grady.

Turner, driving a 2006 Chevy Silverado, was traveling east on Highway 136 and failed to negotiate a right-hand curve, according to Georgia State Patrol.

His vehicle crossed the double yellow lines and was in the lane of oncoming traffic with both left tires on the shoulder of the road for approximately 200 feet, GSP Spokesman Robin Stone said. As Mr. Turner was trying to correct that, he struck the other vehicle head-on.

Waters was driving a 1997 Chevy C-60.

Road conditions at the time were sunny and dry.

The wreck was the second head-on collision near the intersection of Bailey Waters Road and Highway 136 in a two-week time period.
