Dawsonville City Council incumbents Angie Smith and Mike Sosebee can keep their city council seats, according to officials with the Dawson County Board of elections.

With voter turnout reaching near record low levels of 10.5 percent, voters also approved a referendum to allow on-site sales of alcoholic drinks, including distilled spirits, by restaurants and hotels within the city limits on Sundays, 12:30 - midnight.

Smith received 85 votes (41 percent); Sosebee picked up 72 votes (35 percent), and challenger Frank Craft walked away with 48 (23 percent).

I would first like to thank the voters for trusting me to put their needs and concerns first at the city council level, said Smith who was first elected in 2012 to fill one of two seats vacated when then council members James Grogan and Calvin Byrd stepped out to run for mayor. I am excited to continue the downtown revitalization plan and to move toward a more beautiful and vibrant downtown district.

Smith also said she wants to give business owners a voice through the creation of the local merchants association.

I would love to see that come to fruition, she said. I would also like to see a move toward more public input and participation in city government. I think citizens taking an interest in their government is key to its success.

Sosebee said he wants to keep the citys revitalization plan moving forward.

Id like to thank everyone that voted, especially those that voted for me, he said. I want to serve all the citizens of Dawsonville and continue on the path to revitalize downtown Dawsonville and recruit new businesses. We need to keep Dawsonville moving forward.

Challenger Craft said he was disappointed with voter turnout.

There is nothing free in this world except the freedom to vote, he said.

On Sunday alcohol sales, 86 voters said yes (72 percent).

There are currently 1,178 registered voters in the City of Dawsonville.

In the 2009 election, there were 1,083 registered voters with a 24.5 percent election turnout.

In the 2011 election, there were 1,104 registered voters with a 28.71 percent turnout.
