Community celebrates veterans

The Veterans Affairs of Dawson County is hosting a veterans day luncheon, parade, guest speaker and music on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Starting at 1 p.m. at Dawson County Middle School, veterans will be provided a free lunch followed by music, guest speaker Steve Sweazey, who is a Vietnam veteran from Florida, the Dawson County Junior ROTC, a bagpipe solo by Butch Teston, and a patriotic song by Kevin Woody, music director at Dawson County Middle.

A parade begins at the middle school at 3:30 p.m. and winds around the historic courthouse before returning to Academy Avenue. This years parade includes new and vintage military vehicles, a motorcycle contingent, and marching military units from DCHS, North Forsyth High School, the Vietnam Veterans of America, Korean War Veterans from Gainesville, and scout troops.

Luncheon is provided to the veterans by Chick-fil-A and sponsored by Etowah Water and Sewer Authority.

Three elementary schools will also honor local veterans. At Riverview Elementary, a breakfast begins at 8 a.m. and an assembly at 9 a.m. Blacks Mill Elementary Schools program begins at 8:30 a.m. and Robinson Elementary starts at 9 a.m.
