Authorities are investigating the thefts of guns and ammo taken from a deputy's service vehicle last week.

The investigation has also revealed that a second gun was taken from another car in the subdivision the same night.

"Obviously, since there were guns taken from two vehicles that night, we don't believe Maj. [Greg] Rowan was targeted. There's the possibility that they were searching vehicles, opening doors and taking weapons that located," said Dawson County Sheriff's Capt. Tony Wooten.

It's likely the suspect was unaware the vehicle belonged to a law enforcement officer as the SUV is unmarked.

The alleged crimes occurred overnight May 5 in a subdivision on the county's east side, near Ga. 400, according to the sheriff's incident report.

"He reported the guns were missing the next morning," Wooten said.

Rowan's department issued 12-gauge shotgun and .223 rifle, as well as ammunition, were taken in the heist.

"There was no visible forced entry to either vehicle," Wooten said.
