Both drivers were seriously injured in what appears to have been a head-on collision on Hwy. 136, just west of Bailey Waters Road in Dawson County Tuesday morning.

A 20-year-old woman and a 40-year old man were both airlifted to area hospitals.

Their names have not been released.

Dawson County Sheriff's Maj. Greg Rowan said both were conscious and alert when emergency personnel arrived on scene just after 9 a.m.

"They were both talking," he said.

First responders were quickly able to free the injured patients from their vehicles. They were then stabilized and taken by ambulance to Elliott Field where medical helicopters were waiting.

According to Rowan, a preliminary assessment indicated the female driver was traveling east toward Dawsonville and the male was driving west when the crash occurred.

"It's really too early right now to know exactly what caused them to wreck," he said.

Hwy. 136 was expected to be closed for several hours as Georgia State Patrol investigated the crash.
