Reports of a police impersonator in neighboring Lumpkin County have drawn the attention of local authorities.

"We've had no incidents here in Dawson County, but Sheriff [Billy] Carlisle wanted to make sure our citizens are aware of the reports," said Capt. Tony Wooten.

According to a Lumpkin County Sheriff's report, a woman was pulled over by a man in a dark colored "police style" vehicle with a push bumper, spotlight and blue lights.

The incident occurred about 10:30 p.m. Feb. 13 near Morrison Moore Parkway and Memorial Drive in Dahlonega.

The man searched the woman's vehicle and eventually let her go.

Officers said the woman, who was spooked by the man's actions and clothing, later reported the incident. It was determined that man was not a police officer.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating whether the encounter in Lumpkin may be related to similar reports in Jackson and Gwinnett counties.

In each incident, a man driving what appeared to be an unmarked police car conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle driven by a woman.

While the women in Lumpkin and Gwinnett counties were not injured and allowed to leave soon after being stopped, the woman in Jackson was assaulted.

The description given by the women is also similar: a white man about 6 feet tall, thin or medium build with short brown hair, possibly in his 20s or early 30s.

Authorities encourage people to call 911 if they are pulled over or detained by someone they suspect may not be a law enforcement officer.

"Our deputies have obviously stepped up to pay closer attention to any unmarked police cars in our county," Wooten said.
