Operation rounds up fugitives

More than a dozen fugitives were taken into custody over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in what authorities are calling Operation Turkey Claw.

As of Monday, the joint effort of the Dawson County Sheriff and District Attorney offices had resulted in 14 arrests on outstanding bench warrants from Drug, Probate and Superior courts.

The warrants ranged from bail jumping to probation violations. There was one absconded sex offender.

“So far this focus on fugitives has been successful,” Sheriff Billy Carlisle said. “We anticipate apprehending more fugitives in the next three weeks.”

Added District Attorney Lee Darragh: “It is unfair for persons who are arrested for criminal violations to elect not to come to court as required and be able to continue to avoid justice.”

Darragh said his office will work with those who are currently on bench warrant status to turn themselves in by Dec. 15 “to see that they are out of custody for the Christmas holidays.”
