A Big Canoe woman is out on bond after authorities said she tried to smother her 94-year-old mother-in-law with a pillow at her home last week.

Dawson County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Cathrine Hlavenka, 61, and charged her with aggravated assault, a felony, after her husband called authorities.

Sheriff’s Lt. Tony Wooten said the suspect’s husband “walked in on” the early morning incident Sept. 9.

“The husband heard his mom screaming, went to her location and the wife was still holding the pillow,” Wooten said.

He said the mother-in-law did not report being injured during the incident.

Wooten said the mother-in-law, who lives with her son and Hlavenka, “was very descriptive of the incident.”

“She alleges the daughter-in-law attempted to suffocate her,” he said.

Citing the incident report, Wooten said Hlavenka “did make an assault on [her mother-in-law] with a pillow, which was used offensively to place over the face of the victim in an attempt to suffocate her.”

Hlavenka was released Sept. 10 after posting $15,000 bond, he said.
