An incident in neighboring Lumpkin County involving an apparent police impersonator has prompted local officials to urge the community to use caution when being pulled over by unmarked vehicles.

"We've had no incidents here in Dawson County, but Sheriff (Billy) Carlisle wanted to make sure our citizens are aware of the reports," said Capt. Tony Wooten.

According to a report released by the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office, a woman was pulled over by a man in a dark colored "police style" vehicle with a push bumper, spotlight and bluelights around 10:30 p.m. Feb. 13 near the intersection of Morrison Moore Parkway and Memorial Drive inside the city of Dahlonega.

The man searched the woman's vehicle and eventually let her go. Officers said the woman, who was spooked by the man's actions and clothing, later called to report the incident.

Lumpkin County Sheriff's Inv. Jason Canupp said the woman sat down with a sketch artist earlier this week to create an image of the man, who is described as a thin built, white male around 6 feet tall, with short brown hair in his 20s or early 30s.

Dawson and Lumpkin county officers encourage people to call 911 if they are pulled over or detained by someone they suspect may not be law enforcement.

"Our deputies have obviously stepped up to pay closer attention to any unmarked police cars in our county," Wooten said.
