A Gainesville man has died from injuries sustained in a head on collision Saturday night west of Dawsonville.
Dawson County Sheriff's spokesman Capt. Tony Wooten said 58-year-old Joseph Helig was attempting to pass two vehicles on a double yellow line when his Kia Rio collided with an oncoming Honda CRV.
The wreck on Hwy. 53, near Will Hall Road, occurred just before 8:30 p.m.
"Both drivers were transported to area hospitals," Wooten said. "We were notified by the hospital that he passed away."
Witnesses reportedly told officers they had seen the Kia trying to pass other vehicles in a curve on a double yellow line prior to the crash.
The man's death marks the eighth fatality on Dawson County roads since the beginning of the year.
