A verbal altercation between roommates that escalated into a physical fight hospitalized one man and sent another on the run early Saturday morning.

Gustavo Valentin Castro-Maurillo, 22, of Dawsonville was arrested a short time later near his home on Lumpkin Campground Road in southern Dawson County.

"He fled the scene on foot, and because alcohol was involved, wasn't able to get very far," said Dawson County Sheriff's Capt. Tony Wooten. "He was spotted and reported by a passerby and later taken into custody."

His roommate, whose name has not been released, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital with serious injuries to his face and upper extremities, according to Wooten.

Castro-Maurillo was charged with battery and aggravated battery, the latter a felony.

He was scheduled before a judge on Monday for a first appearance hearing.

As of Tuesday afternoon, he remained in custody at the Dawson County Detention Center.
