CUMMING - A Dawsonville man who attempted to run away from Cumming police was arrested Wednesday morning after a brief chase.

According to Cumming Police Sgt. Aletha Barrett, officers responded about 10:20 a.m. to reports of a fight in the parking lot of Publix at Tri County Plaza.

Barrett said Forsyth County Sheriff's deputies, who had been called to assist, eventually found 46-year-old Russell Wayne McClendon in the woods between Ga. 400 and the shopping center.

According to Robin Regan, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, deputies had set up a perimeter after observing McClendon from a distance.

He was later turned over to Cumming police, which will formally file charges. As of Thursday, it remained unclear what those charges would be.
