Authorities say Wayne McCord did not help take the thousands of dollars his wife is accused of funneling from Dawson County Clerk of Courts’ accounts.
They do contend, however, that he knew he was signing a false tax return earlier this year.
Wayne McCord, 60, has been charged with one count each of tax evasion and false statements in connection with the couple’s 2009 return.
McCord turned himself in at the Dawson County Law Enforcement Center on May 24, about three weeks after warrants were issued for him. He was released after posting bond that same day.
In their state tax form, the McCords failed to report the more than $140,000 that Becky McCord, the former Dawson County clerk of court, allegedly took.
Wayne McCord surrendered about two weeks after his wife was arrested at their Keith Evans Road home on charges she failed to report the sum on her joint 2008 and 2009 state income tax returns.
Wayne McCord was not at the couple’s Keith Evans Road home on May 10, when a deputy arrived to serve the warrants.
Becky McCord was first arrested Feb. 11 after authorities say she took the money from a clerk of courts account that held passport payments.
According to authorities, she wrote more than $200,000 in checks to herself over several years from the account, though they say she was entitled only to about $77,000.
McCord, who had served as clerk since 1993 and resigned in mid-March, was initially charged with one count of theft by taking.
Her attorneys and those for two others charged in separate thefts involving the clerk of court’s office this year each waived formal arraignment May 18 in Superior Court.
Trial dates have not been set.
Pam Henson, who was appointed by the four judges of the Northeastern Judicial Circuit in late March, is serving as interim clerk until a successor is chosen in a special election July 20.
