A Dawson County man who authorities say they had been watching for more than two years was charged with trafficking methamphetamine earlier this month.

Daniel Jeffrey Thompson, 46, is being held without bond at the Dawson County jail.

Thompson also was charged with sale of a controlled substance and using a communication device to facilitate a crime.

The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests could be made in connection to the case, which involves the Dawson and Lumpkin County sheriff's offices, as well as the Appalachian Drug Task Force.

Thompson was arrested Feb. 2 following a search of his home on Old Henry Grady Road. Lumpkin County Sheriff's deputies had apprehended him minutes earlier during a traffic stop.

"Even though he has been under investigation here at the sheriff's office for a couple of years, information we received lately came from the Appalachian Drug Task Force and Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office and led to Mr. Thompson's arrest in Dawson County," Dawson County Sheriff's Capt. Tony Wooten said.

"We have to work together, and this is a good indication as to why, because criminals don't stop at county lines."

About 3 ounces of suspected methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of $4,800, was found during the search.

Authorities also seized four antique trucks worth nearly $73,000 from the property.

"We believe they were used to facilitate drug deals," Wooten said.
