An 18-year-old Gainesville woman has been arrested in connection with the theft of about $6,800 from a Dawsonville retailer.

According to Dawson County Sheriff's Capt. Tony Wooten, Shelby Sweatman has been charged with 16 counts of theft by taking after she reportedly took money from cash registers at the Dawsonville Walmart, where she worked.

Sweatman was released from the Dawson County Detention Center on Friday after posting a $15,200 bond, according to the sheriff's office.

"On July 24, we received a call asking the sheriff's office to respond to Walmart for a potential employee theft," Wooten said. "Sgt. Anthony Davis responded and found that Walmart had done their own investigation into the alleged thefts and had audited the registers Ms. Sweatman had been using."

The cash, ranging in amounts from $100 to $1,800, was taken over a two-month span, Wooten said.

"From my understanding, Ms. Sweatman later admitted to Sgt. Davis that she indeed did commit the alleged thefts and Sgt. Davis took her into custody," Wooten said.
