A shoplifting suspect was arrested Monday after leading Dawson County sheriff's deputies on a car chase into Forsyth County.

Russell Wayne McClendon, 44, of Gainesville is being held at the Dawson County Detention Center. Bond has not been set.

According to Dawson County Sheriff's Maj. Tony Wooten, McClendon likely will face a variety of charges, including fleeing and attempting to elude, reckless driving, shoplifting and possession of drug-related objects.

The incident began about 3:18 p.m. with a report of shoplifting at Walmart. According to Wooten, the caller reported the suspect had left in a red Jeep.

Wooten said Sheriff's Lt. Doug Boyle spotted the vehicle at Ga. 400 and Dawson Forest Road, at which point he and other deputies began their pursuit.

McClendon led them into Forsyth County, where he attempted to seek shelter at what was believed to be a family member's home on Settingdown Road, according to Wooten.

McClendon then attempted to run away from authorities before being Tased and apprehended.
