A Big Canoe man faces sexual battery charges in connection with a reported attack at a home in the gated community over the New Year's weekend.

Jose Alfredo Delafuente, 48, was arrested Monday following an investigation into an attempted rape at a holiday gathering in Big Canoe.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Delafuente remained in custody at the Dawson County Jail on aggravated sexual battery and sexual battery charges, both of which are felonies. Bond had not been set.

Dawson County Sheriff's Lt. Ray Goodie said Delafuente, a guest at the party, allegedly forced himself on a woman.

"[She] went to bed. When she woke up, he was on top of her kissing her and touching her inappropriately," Goodie said.

The woman, who suffered injuries during the alleged attack, reported the assault Jan. 3.
