Sawnee EMC reduces power rate for rest of year

Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation has announced it is lowering rates for most members by reducing the component with which most power bills are calculated.

The Cumming-based corporation's board of directors approved the reduction in the wholesale power cost adjustment factor, which should produce a "positive financial impact for almost every Sawnee EMC member."

Effective this week, the rate change will reduce monthly Sawnee EMC bills by $10.57 for every 1,000 kWh used. It is estimated this reduction, in total, will save members about $9.9 million on bills processed between September and year's end.

Those affected members who use more electricity will see bigger savings, officials said.

Blake House, Sawnee EMC's vice president of member services, described the move as "very good news for our members."

"We are proud to be able to support our members and the communities we serve in any way we can, especially after we have all been dealing with such a brutally hot summer," he said in a statement.

Sawnee EMC provides electricity to about 158,600 accounts in seven counties throughout north Georgia.

The factor being reduced is an adjustment component used within many of the corporation's retail rates to address various operating costs that are generally not recovered through standard retail rates.

This adjustment will lower the electricity rate for "almost every Sawnee EMC member on their energy bills during this four-month period."
