A pool tournament fundraiser and silent auction to support Army personnel in Kabul, Afghanistan, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at Cherokee Music & Arcade.

Reservations are still available for the tournament, which was organized by Bobby and Stacy Amos.

Merchandise is still coming in for the silent auction, according to event volunteer JJ Seay.

Seay said the Amos family “donates more than 100 boxes a month to troops” in the 148th Brigade Support Battalion. Each care package costs about $14.

“They’re spending a lot of money in a down economy, shipping these packages to the soldiers,” Seay said. “They want to help out, and this tournament will go toward that cause.”

Seay said items donated for the silent auction run the gamut.

“There has been some nice stuff donated,” he said, adding that 100 percent of money from the auction and tournament goes to soldiers.

About 95 percent of the soldiers in the 148th Brigade Support Battalion are from Georgia.

Headquartered in Macon, the 148th is part of Georgia’s 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

A smaller unit, it is a medial company made up of 32 men and 24 women who support members of all branches of the service, as well as civilians and some local residents.
