The weeks of rain the area has received may have made the ground mushy, but that didn't stop Friday's ceremony to celebrate the upcoming opening of the state's first Culver's restaurant.

Owners Tapashvi Jaiswal and Manish Shah, along with their families and community supporters, tossed the first shovels of dirt to make way for the new eatery at 252 South 400 Center Lane, between Captain D's and Zaxby's.

If the weather cooperates, the partners hope to open in about 120 days, according to Shah.

"We're excited to be in Dawsonville," he said.

Signature items include the ButterBurger, (from the lightly buttered bun) made from fresh, never frozen U.S. beef, and fresh Frozen Custard, including the signature Flavor of the Day program.

Billed as fast-casual, Culver's is a Wisconsin-based franchise chain with more than 550 independently owned and operated restaurants in 22 states.

The Dawson County restaurant will be the first in Georgia, while plans are already in place for a location at Mall of Georgia in Buford.

Craig Culver's family started the restaurant 31 years ago.

"We're still a family owned business today and our intent is to stay that way. Tapashvi and Manish, they are wonderful people...they are ready," he said. "They come from a great family and will surround themselves with great people as well."

The restaurants' award-winning customer service is based on small-town, Midwestern values, genuine friendliness and an unwavering commitment to quality and cleanliness, according to a news release from the restaurant.

Christie Haynes, president of the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the new business to the community.

"I'm very excited that we're going to have the first in the whole state of Georgia," she said. "We are so blessed that you picked to invest here in Dawson County."
