With plans for expansion approved, Atlanta Motorsports Park is celebrating by breaking ground on the site.

The park will be holding the groundbreaking ceremony at 11 a.m. on Sept. 20.

"The groundbreaking is open to the public," said AMP CEO Jeremy Porter. "Everyone is welcome to come on out."

The Dawsonville Planning Commission heard a presentation from park representatives regarding the expansion during its Aug. 18 regular meeting.

"The current zoning ... includes the club house, pool, cart track building ... and more," Porter said during the meeting.

The commission met the plans with open arms.

"I think what the park is doing is good for the community and the Dawsonville area," said planning commission member Ken Breeden during the meeting. "We are pleased that you are here and in business. It's commendable that you are working on expanding and ... improving the property."

The groundbreaking will be specifically for the new pool and business and conference center, according to Porter.

"The construction should officially start one or two weeks after the ceremony," Porter said.

According to Porter, the new 20,000-square-feet centers will be used for "garages, classrooms, car launches, fitness center, playroom, wine room, bar, catering kitchen, meeting facility, offices, control tower, car elevator" and more.

Porter said that the new building has something for everybody, even those that aren't members of the park.

"This building will bring more jobs to the community," he said. "For members, it will offer a better, more complete facility, pool, amenities, more events and a place to host parties."

Atlanta Motorsports Park is located at 20 Duck Thurmond Road, off Hwy 53. For more information about the park or the groundbreaking, call (678) 381-8527.
