The job search has changed dramatically over the years. Advances in technology and the decline in the economy have changed the way people get hired.

Lanier Technical College hasn't hosted a job fair on its Oakwood campus since the economic downfall of 2008, said Malissa Lawrence, career services specialist at the Oakwood campus. But the college will host its first fair in six years from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. today.

Lawrence said 60 employers with immediate openings will be present for the fair, which is open to students and the general public.

"This is a really big deal for us since we're inviting employers to our campus for the first time in a little while," she said. "And these 60 employers are all hiring. They're not just sitting there - they have some immediate openings."

The positions range from medical to industrial to business and marketing, Lawrence said.

Employers attending include Carter's Oshkosh, Kubota, Hall County government, Impulse Manufacturing, IMS Gear, Northeast Georgia Health System and Target.

"It's really some good opportunities there," Lawrence said.

The fair is free to all.

Lawrence said employers stressed the importance of applicants dressing professionally and bringing several copies of their resumes.

Lawrence said Lanier Tech helped sponsor career fairs in the past, but being able to host its own fair is an asset to both the college and the community.

For those in the general public who have training in their field and have been searching for good job opportunities, this is the fair to go to, Lawrence said. For the students at Lanier Tech, the fair is an experience they can't get applying online, because it gives them a chance to make a personal impression on the employers.

"This may be the first time they're meeting face to face with hiring managers," she said. "So much is hidden when you apply online, but this job fair gives our candidates and students a chance to meet these hiring managers and present themselves and their potentials to them."
