Veterans group presents scholarships to students from Dawson and Lumpkin counties

This month, Vietnam Veterans of America North Georgia Mountains Chapter 970 awarded $1,000 scholarships to six local students from Dawson and Lumpkin County Schools.

Each student, along with their parents and friends, attended the chapter’s July meeting, where President William Martin presented a check made out to the student and the university or college they will attend.

The six students awarded included Clara Bennett, Sarah Hunsinger, Georgia Smith, James Scott, June Harmon and Olivia Walls.

Each year, the North Georgia Mountains Chapter conducts its annual raffle to raise funds to support scholarships and community efforts. The chapter also supports No One Alone, Senior Propane, Hospice of Northeast Georgia’s Veterans Program, Rainbow Children’s Home, and several other programs throughout the year.

The chapter will start its raffle ticket sales in August and will draw winners on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2021.
