Rotary Island is a splash pad, located at Rock Creek Park, which was paid for and completed by the Rotary Club of Dawson County in 2014 and was constructed in collaboration between the club, Etowah Water and Sewer Authority, Dawson County and Dawson County Parks and Recreation.

Each year, the Rotary Club of Dawson County holds a grand opening celebration for the splash pad. According to the club’s president Jo Brewer, the club has been unable to hold this celebration for the past couple of years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so this year’s event was all the more special.

“We love to give back to the community — service above self is our motto — so we do this every year to celebrate the re-opening of the splash park and just give back to our community,” Brewer said. “I love this one in particular because it brings families out; you see and hear so much negativity in the news and other places but this is an event where families can just come and spend special time with each other and with their neighbors and friends; that’s kind of what it’s all about.”

This year’s event included free snow cones, hot dogs, chips and drinks, along with several different fun activities for all ages like face painting, lawn games and arts and crafts. Several local nonprofits, including The Place of Dawson County, K.A.R.E. for Kids, the Good Shepherd Clinic and Alliance Together, also had booths set up during the event to network with the community and to showcase their services to anyone who might need them.

According to Brewer, the event is a great example of what Dawson County is all about, and the club is grateful to be able to host it each year.

“It’s a wonderful, wonderful day, and it’s just great to see the kids having such a great time,” Brewer said. “The kids love the splash park and the parents love it too because they’ll probably be tired and have a nice nap when they get home. And it’s really just a good, family-oriented, fun-in-the-sun type of event.”

Rotary Island is at Rock Creek Park, located at 445 Martin Road in Dawson County.
