The Dawson Community Food Bank and Thrift Store now boasts a new location at 671 Lumpkin Camp Ground Rd. South Ste. 30.

The nonprofit operates its food bank Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 1-5 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The food bank officially opened its doors at the beginning of this month.

Food bank director Linda Benson explained that the space is a much better location for the nonprofit, saying “we feel like we can reach more people here.”

Previously, the food bank served over 700 families, and Benson expects them to be able to serve even more now.

“We just want to be sure [that] if we can help people not go hungry, we want to be able to help them,” she added.

The food bank’s volunteers usually give clients a pre-arranged box as well as let them choose items like fresh fruit, desserts or bottled drinks.

The nonprofit’s thrift store is accepting donations. Funds from those items play a crucial role in supporting building operations and financing food for families as well as gas costs associated with the food bank.

Benson reiterated that she and her volunteers have “the same mission in mind, to help people.”
