Shelter seeks volunteers

POSTED: July 2, 2014 4:00 a.m.

No One Alone is seeking volunteers to help in its Dahlonega shelter.

"NOA needs committed volunteers willing to be trained to assist with answering crisis calls, babysitting children at the shelter, mentoring opportunities with NOA clients and their children and preparing food," said Andrea Shoemaker, public relations director for NOA.

The nonprofit organization aims for the shelter to "provide safe haven and support services to victims of domestic violence."

In addition to providing emergency shelter, the program offers a 24-hour crisis line, case management, financial assistance, life skills groups, parenting classes, individual counseling and support groups, legal advocacy, and educational scholarships to help victims and their children achieve safety and stability.

The shelter is also looking for maintenance support volunteers, outdoor and grounds support, administrative support volunteers, special events volunteers and Southern Finds volunteers.

"Southern Finds is an outreach program of NOA. The store provides clothing, personal items and necessities for women, children and men who are experiencing hardship due to domestic violence," Shoemaker said. "All of the store proceeds benefit NOA clients."

Since first opening its doors in 1992, NOA has assisted more than 12,500 victims through shelter and support services.

For more information on how to volunteer or about NOA, contact Andrea Shoemaker at (706) 344-3853 or ashoemaker@noonealone.org.
