Intersection named in youth’s memory

POSTED: June 11, 2014 4:00 a.m.

A ceremony will be held Thursday in memory of a young man many in Dawsonville knew as "Soldier Boy."

Kenny Stewart was just 12-years-old when he lost his more than five-year battle with cancer in March 2013.

But on Thursday, his name will forever be a part of the community as officials dedicate one of the county's most traveled intersections in his honor.

"We are going to be having the official dedication ceremony at the intersection of Hwy. 53 and Perimeter Road. The DOT will place the signs there and we will unveil the signs and have a ceremony there honoring Kenny," said State Rep. Kevin Tanner, who introduced the legislation for the act.

"I think it was important to do this because Kenny meant so much to this community, especially to the Robinson Elementary and Dawson County Middle School family, where the students and faculty grew so close to him."

Stewart's mother, Anna Miles, said he would be proud to see his name at the intersection.

"We first started talking about this about a year and a half ago, so Kenny was aware it could happen," she said. "I cannot wait for 40 years down the road for that generation's kids who see the signs and ask who Kenny Stewart was and for those parents to be able to say they knew him and what he meant to them."

The dedication will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the intersection.

The community is invited.
