Native coaches all-star game

Dawson County native Stuart Chester had the opportunity to coach some of the nation's best young baseball players recently in the ninth annual Perfect Game All-American Classic at PETCO Park in San Diego, Calif.

The East versus West matchup Aug. 14 featured 38 of the nation's most promising high school players.

With more than 500 feature go-cart victories and more than 40 championships, 12-year-old Spencer Davis has established himself as a winning driver before he's old enough to get a license.

This season, the Dawsonville resident moved up to late-model trucks, where his winning ways haven't missed a beat.

Holbrook breaking records

Former Dawson County Lady Tiger golfer Kasay Holbrook had a great junior year at Presbyterian College last season. A 2008 Dawson County High School graduate, Holbrook has set or broke several Blue Hose records during her 3-year career at the Clinton, S.C. school.

Holbrook played in 10 tournaments this past season for Head Coach Thomas Addison.

NFL career kicks off

Dawson County High graduate and former University of Tennessee punter Chad Cunningham has signed a free-agent contract with the Tennessee Titans.

Cunningham went undrafted in April, but said that he believed he would get a shot with an NFL team.

New team in town

There is another football team in town. Atlanta Sports Academy, located on the campus of the former Southern Catholic College in Gold Creek, recently began football conditioning and practice.

Players from all over the United States and Canada recently moved into the dorms on the school's campus.

Preparing for college

On a sweltering Saturday morning 60 plus football players took to the field at Veterans Memorial Park in Dawsonville. They were there to participate in a joint effort by Beyond Sports Network and Atlanta Sports Academy to evaluate players for college and beyond.

The combine was structured as a National Football League type experience.

Top five finish gives Elliott momentum

Chase Elliott and the's Chevrolet team took another step forward on NASCAR's K&N Pro Series East Series as he finished fifth in the circuit's inaugural run at Langley Speedway and earned his second "Rookie of the Race' award.

Elliott, the youngest driver on the circuit at age 15, qualified seventh for the Visit Hampton VA 175 with a lap at 85.968 miles per hour around the .396-mile speedway.

FCA Camp held at school

Dawson County High School hosted a Fellowship of Christian Athletes football camp last week.

The camp was held Wednesday through Friday at the school's practice field.

Boys team preparing for season

The varsity Tiger basketball team received a huge loss last week with the injury of starting guard, Tyler Dominy. Dominy fractured his ankle during a game at Chestatee High School. The star basketball player and quarterback on the football team could be out a minimum of six weeks.

"This was a major loss for the summer because of his play and leadership," said Dawson County High School Head Basketball Coach Thad Burgess.

Davenport recognized

Tiger senior track athlete Rush Davenport was named to the Gainesville Times honorable mention All-Area team last week.

Davenport set several records while at Dawson County High School.

Middle school participates at Pickens event

Upcoming Dawson County Middle School Lady Tiger eighth graders participated in a team camp at Pickens County High School last week.

The Lady Tigers went undefeated after winning all three games they played by a substantial margin.

Tigers to host FCA event

Dawson County High School will be the host of a Fellowship of Christian Athletes "Youth Football Power Camp" on June 15-17. The camp will be held on the Dawson County High School Football Field from 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. daily.

Cost for the camp will be $100 and each camper will receive an FCA t-shirt, athlete's Bible and lunch.

Fun-damental Camp a success

Dawson County Middle School coach Tina Brown directed the annual Lady Tiger Fun-damental Camp last week at Rock Creek Park's gymnasium. Helping teach basketball fundamentals and skills were coaches Frank Brown, Steve Sweat, Tonya Porter and Steven Moates.

Ladies keep busy during summer

The Dawson County High School Lady Tiger basketball team has a busy summer planned. Head Coach Steve Sweat and his varsity and junior varsity basketball teams have already begun preparing for next season with several practice games and camps.

After five practices the team headed to Pickens County High School in Jasper for a series of games against some tough opponents. Games against the likes of AAAAA power North Gwinnett, Duluth, and other big schools will help Dawson County get ready for next year, according to Sweat.

Walters named to first team

Lady Tiger track star Madalyn Walters was named First Team All-Area by the Gainesville Times last week. Walters, a junior, captured the Region 8-AA 3,200-meter championship. She also finished in second place in the 1,600-meters during the region meet.

At the state meet in Albany, Walters was runner-up in the 3,200-meters with a time of 11:47 and she also crossed the finish line in second place in the 1,600-meters with a time of 5:21.
