Elliott gets first top-five truck finish
Dawsonville's Chase Elliott carded his first Camping World Truck Series top-five finish Sunday at Rockingham Speedway in North Carolina. The fifth-place finish follows his sixth-place run at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia, where the 17-year-old Hendrick Motorsports driver made his national racing debut a week earlier.
Golf tourney benefits youth
Dawson County Young Life is still accepting players for its annual golf tournament that will be held Monday at Hampton Golf Club in Cumming. Entry fees are $100 for individuals or $400 for a four-player team.
Elliott races to sixth-place finish
In his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race, Dawsonville's Chase Elliott drove to a sixth-place finish Saturday at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia. Racing against veterans like Kevin Harvick and Ron Hornday Jr., the 17-year-old rookie was among a half dozen teenagers in the field.
Big year in sports for Dawson County
Last year brought many championships and state playoff runs to the athletes in Dawson County. Community support is at an all-time high as witnessed during the boys' basketball Elite Eight game in Dalton. Following are a list of the major accomplishments of Dawson County athletes and team from 2012.
Racing hall of fame inducts new class
The Georgia Racing Hall of Fame celebrated its 2012 class of inductees Friday night in Dawsonville. Selected for their contributions to Georgia's motorsport's heritage, the new class of inductees includes Pete Hamilton, Bill Ingram, Warren Johnson, Doug Kenimer and Herman Wise.
Lakewood reunion brings racers, fans together
The Georgia Racing Hall of Fame hosted the fifth annual Lakewood Speedway Reunion on Saturday in honor of the hundreds of racers who competed on the famed Atlanta track. "This is the kind of reunion I want to have more of," said racing historian and board member Gordon Pirkle. "One where you sit among the cars, watch racing footage on the TV's and visit with one another."
Local named national rifle champion
A member of River Bend Gun Club in western Dawson County is the 2012 Black Powder Cartridge Rifle National Champion. Shooting in the master's class, Doug Gazaway of Gainesville won the scope division held July 17 and 18 in Raton, N.M. His spotter, Steve Hubbard, is also a club member.
Festival profiled on network
With less than three months left before the 45th annual Mountain Moonshine Festival, the Speed Channel is giving the nation a look at last year's festivities with an episode of My Classic Cars this weekend. The episode, which features host Dennis Gage at last year's festival, will first air at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and again at 9:30 p.m. Aug. 26.
American Legion finishes third
The Dawsonville Post 247 American Legion team was one win away from advancing to the regional tournament. The team, coached by former Dawson County star Kasey Wilson, came up short and lost its last two games of the tournament to finish the season.
Teen wins national rifle championship
Dawsonville resident Tristan Melton, 13, has garnered national recognition for his performance in various recent rifle competitions. A rising eighth-grader at Dawson County Middle School, Melton has earned three first-place medals, been named a state champion and set a National Rifle Association record in his sub-junior class. All since April.
Legion wins 3 of 4
Head Coach Kasey Wilson's American Legion Post 247 team had a busy weekend. The team played four games in two days. Battling the weather and humidity Dawsonville pulled out three big wins and lost the fourth game in a heartbreaker after leading the entire contest.
Program looks to curb bullying
Kids from Dawson County and the surrounding area have one more chance to take part in a free self-defense program. The program, hosted by White Tiger Yongin Mixed Martial Arts in Dawsonville, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. The event began as an effort to reduce bullying in schools and the local community.
Elliott wins World Crown 300
Local racing historian Gordon Pirkle has a prediction. "Chase Elliott, he's going to be as big as his dad was in his hay day. I've never seen someone as young as him carry himself and race the way he does," Pirkle said.
Legendary announcer dies
The Georgia racing industry paused last week to remember a legendary announcer and 2003 Hall of Fame inductee. Known as racing's "little, bitty buddy," Jimmy Mosteller died July 4 at age 85.
Partington pitches a complete game
American Legion Post 247 bounced back with an 18-4 win over Cumming on Saturday. The game proved to be some revenge following a 13-9 loss to the same team on June 19.
