Teen wins national rifle championship

Dawsonville resident Tristan Melton, 13, has garnered national recognition for his performance in various recent rifle competitions.

A rising eighth-grader at Dawson County Middle School, Melton has earned three first-place medals, been named a state champion and set a National Rifle Association record in his sub-junior class. All since April.

Head Coach Kasey Wilson's American Legion Post 247 team had a busy weekend. The team played four games in two days.

Battling the weather and humidity Dawsonville pulled out three big wins and lost the fourth game in a heartbreaker after leading the entire contest.

Program looks to curb bullying

Kids from Dawson County and the surrounding area have one more chance to take part in a free self-defense program.

The program, hosted by White Tiger Yongin Mixed Martial Arts in Dawsonville, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. The event began as an effort to reduce bullying in schools and the local community.

Dawsonville man among hall of fame semifinalists

A Dawsonville man is among 15 semifinalists for the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame's 2012 class of inductees.

The winner of more than 200 NHRA, IHRA and AHRA sanctioned drag racing events, Dick Brannon was directly involved in the development of the Ford 427 race engines and played an important role in development of the 1967 Ford Fairlane 427, including one in which Mario Andretti won the Daytona 500.

Local earns national honors on rifle team

Dawsonville native Mattie Brogdon, a senior on the Texas Christian University rifle team, garnered national attention when she received All-American honors in March.

The young markswoman was named to the 2012 National Rifle Association's All-Americans Smallbore Second Team and received an Air Rifle Honorable Mention.
